Increase Sales
1st
Way to Increase Sales: Know Your Customer
Do you know to whom you’re selling? It’s a remarkable
fact, but many people don’t even know who their customer is
(so how can they increase sales?)! That means that trying to increase
sales is like searching for a needle in a haystack… while
blindfolded. If you really are serious about attempting to increase
sales at your business, you absolutely must know your clientele.
Otherwise, it will be nearly impossible to increase sales because
you won’t be targeting your marketing toward the right people.
2nd
Way to Increase Sales: Know Your Product/Services
Similarly, if you don’t know what you’re selling, trying
to increase sales will be very difficult. “But I know what
we offer,” you might protest, and you probably do… but
not thoroughly. To increase sales, you need to know what your product
line is inside and out. You have to be aware of all the benefits,
including any statistical data to back it up. That way, when a prospect
asks any question, you’ll have the answer on the tip of your
tongue, thereby impressing your prospect and, hopefully, leading
you to increase sales.
3rd
Way to Increase Sales: Never Fib
Many salespeople have gotten a “bad rap” because the
rumor is that to get ahead and increase sales, you need to tell
a few white lies. This is false! Professionals who actually increase
sales always tell the truth. And if you cannot be forthright about
your product or service, then there is something wrong with what
you’re trying to sell. Remember that honesty is always the
best policy when it comes to attempting to increase sales. Otherwise,
you may think you’re starting to increase sales only to find
that you lose whatever profits you gained because people are returning
merchandise left and right or requesting refunds for a shoddy service.
4th
Way to Increase Sales: Advertise
Okay, this seems like an obvious method to increase sales, but many
places do not understand that advertising doesn’t simply mean
putting an ad in the paper and waiting for the phone to ring. Truly,
advertising means trying many different techniques and venues, such
as television, print media, radio, billboards, and web ads to increase
sales. Additionally, you’ll never increase sales if you don’t
give your advertising a chance to work. Many new (and even some
seasoned) business people place one ad and think that their work
is done. Then, when they don’t increase sales as a result,
they assume that advertising “doesn’t work.” Again,
this is untrue. Advertising does work, but you have to use the best
approach for your product or service as well as giving your advertising
time to seep in to your prospect’s minds; otherwise, you won’t
be able to increase sales.
5th
Way to Increase Sales: Educate Your Sales Staff
You need to keep your sales team informed to increase sales. And
when you do, you’ll increase sales far beyond what you expected.
This means sending sales folk to trainings, encouraging them to
read trade publications, and sharing articles with your colleagues
on a regular basis. By keeping your sales staff up-to-date on the
latest selling trends and methods, you’ll be able to increase
sales while also providing a benefit to all your employees. It’s
absolutely a win-win approach. And as an extra “plus”,
your salesperson’s clients will be happy that they their sales
representatives are so professional and knowledgeable, thus upping
your chances to increase sales.
6th
Way to Increase Sales: Have a Sales System
It’s amazing, but many companies that want to increase sales
never set into motion a plan to systemize their selling. Thus, every
sales professional on the team has his or her own way of selling
(and you can’t increase sales that way.) Though this may work
for a while, it’s not a good method to increase sales in the
long run. After all, if everyone has his or her own approach, then
there is no continuity. It also makes reporting very difficult,
because any data for which you might look is scattered among a dozen
different sales reps. By implementing a sales strategy that is uniform
among your employees, you’ll be able to increase sales and
also make your reps’ lives a little easier (though many might
protest at first.) A good first step toward starting a sales system
is to invest in a customer management software program, such as
the highly touted Prophet program (available at avidian.com.) This
way, all your data will be in one locale, enabling you to increase
sales while simultaneously being efficient.
7th
Way to Increase Sales: Ask for Regular Reports and Updates
Again, many businesses do not require that sales members provide
regular reports. Consequently, at the end of every quarter, sales
staff spend copious amounts of time scrambling for information such
as profit margins, number of prospects visited, and sales calls
that landed the deal. That’s no way to increase sales! Instead,
invest in a system like the aforementioned Prophet software, and
all your data will be at your fingertips. With a few clicks of your
mouse, you’ll be able to see exactly how well everyone has
been performing, an essential first step to being able to increase
sales department- and company-wide.
8th
Way to Increase Sales: Do Trend Analyses
Do you track your trends? If not, it’s something you should
consider because it can really help increase sales. For instance,
if you have a better understanding of the times of the year when
prospects are most likely to “bite”, you can increase
sales by putting more of your selling time into prospecting during
those weeks or months. Similarly, you can increase sales by knowing
exactly which of your products seems to be selling “like hotcakes”.
Yes, you may have a vague notion of this information already, but
with a trend analysis, you’ll be able to support your “gut
feeling” with black and white facts and, as a result, increase
sales.
9th
Way to Increase Sales: Reward Your Salespersons
If you haven’t yet implemented a system for rewarding your
sales staff, it’s time to start! After all, everyone likes
to be appreciated. When you begin to start offering bonuses for
your top sales stars, it’ll help you increase sales across
the board. Additionally, it will increase sales because all your
selling team members will begin a healthy amount of competition.
Make sure your prizes are worth it, though, or you won’t increase
sales by much. Little mugs don’t always cut the mustard; instead,
offer incentives like vacation days or bonus pay as a way to increase
sales.
10th
Way to Increase Sales: Keep Learning and Changing
The best sales forces in the world know that to increase sales,
you cannot remain stagnant. In today’s global marketplace,
sales techniques and expectations are changing rapidly. Thus, if
you’re serious about trying to increase sales, you need to
get moving and keep changing to fit the needs of your clientele
and employees. By doing so, you’ll not only increase sales;
you’ll also ensure that your company thrives for many years
to come.
